What is an Entrepreneur?
Entrepreneur /ˌɒntrəprəˈnəː/
(noun) a person who sets up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit.
Having an entrepreneurial mindset is like an itch you just gotta scratch. Some people catch the bug early and start coming up with business ideas while they’re still in school selling stuff to classmates. Others don’t feel the call until much later, after earning some success working for others.
But whenever it hits, it’s like this restless energy takes hold. You start seeing opportunities everywhere. You keep a notebook full of all the products or services people seem to want or need. Your mind races with potential ways to reach those customers better than what’s out there already.
Before you know it, you’re lying awake at night, business plans and marketing schemes spinning almost uncontrollably. It’s hard to think about much else! But that intense focus and vision is what it takes to will a new successful company into existence.
All the most iconic entrepreneurs seem to have that fired-up drive and magnetism that pulls people and resources toward bringing their ideas life. And once they taste success, they’re ready to do it again, and again:
Kim Kardashian has launched THIRTEEN business ventures.
Elon Musk has founded EIGHT companies.
Steve Jobs started FOUR businesses.
But that’s not all!
Impact of Entrepreneurship
Did you know that “micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in South Africa:
- account for over 2 million companies,
- represent over 98% of formal businesses, and
- have experienced two-digit growth in the last (few) years?”
(According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development 2023)
What’s more, because MSMEs play a major part in the economic growth of South Africa, you have (your business has) the chance (opportunity) to uplift the entire nation!
Barriers
Unfortunately, the transformative power MSMEs is restricted by three factors (as identified by a 2022 Partner Dialogue):
- The regulatory environment
- Access to finance
- Insufficient entrepreneurship education and skills building.
While People Dynamics can’t do much about the first, this course addresses issues two and three. So, take advantage of the wealth of knowledge you are about to access, and enjoy the journey to becoming a successful business owner.
